As one year closes and another begins, we often ask what needs to be left behind — and what we are willing to commit to again.

This reflection explores an ancient sign of belonging, and what it may still reveal about faith, identity, and growth.

It’s New Year's Eve, so let’s think about circumcision.

Wait, don’t click away. I know we are on the verge of 2026, and you’re probably wondering, Why on earth would I want to think about this today?

I promise, there’s something going on in this ancient, peculiar practice and a story about God and Abraham that still has relevance for anyone trying to grow, evolve, and live with purpose.

So yes, let’s think about circumcision. Probably not one for party conversations tonight, but stay with me.

Throughout my writing, one of the things I have attempted to point out is that the early chapters of the Bible aren’t just about ancient history; they are also about identity. Those early chapters spell out what it means to belong. They carry an awareness that a new kind of tribe is forming, led by Abraham. It would be a tribe called to show the world something different: the redeeming, healing love of God.
