Lent begins tomorrow, on Ash Wednesday. As we prepare to enter Lent together, this piece is an invitation not simply to observe a season, but to allow it to observe us.
A question quietly sits beneath the story of Jesus in the wilderness.
It is not really about bread, kingdoms, or even about a dramatic encounter with the devil. It is about relationship, and what happens when that relationship is tested at its most vulnerable point.
When we read the account of the temptations of Christ in Matthew 4:1–11, it is easy to treat it as a moral lesson. Resist temptation. Be stronger. Try harder this Lent. Give up something enjoyable and prove your devotion.
But if that is all we hear, we risk shrinking the passage into something far smaller than it was ever meant to be. This is not primarily a story about willpower. It is a story about identity, trust, and the subtle ways in which both can be undermined.
And that is why it still speaks so powerfully now.
