The Jesus We Imagine Is Not Always the Jesus We Meet in the Gospels
The surprising silences that reveal what the Gospel writers really wanted us to notice

One of the strangest things about the Gospels is not what they tell us about Jesus.
It is what they leave out.
We know more about Jesus than almost anyone who has ever lived. His words have shaped civilisations. His image has appeared on cathedral ceilings, in countless paintings, films and books. Billions of people across the world have built their lives around him.
Yet when you actually sit down and read the four Gospels carefully, something surprising happens.
There are enormous gaps.
We do not know what Jesus looked like. We know almost nothing about his childhood. We do not know what his voice sounded like, what made him laugh, or what kind of personality he had during those hidden years before his public ministry.
For someone who changed history so profoundly, the Gospels are remarkably uninterested in many of the details we would probably want to know. There are questions we naturally ask about Jesus that the Gospels simply do not answer.
And perhaps that silence is telling us something.
Perhaps the writers were not trying to give us the biography we would have written, but show us something much more important.

The Bible Never Tells Us What Jesus Looked Like
This is perhaps the most obvious example. The Gospels never describe Jesus’ physical appearance. It does not even tell us whether he was striking or ordinary, imposing or gentle-looking.
That is remarkable when you think about it. The disciples spent years travelling with Jesus. They watched him teach, heal, argue, pray, laugh and weep. Yet none of them thought to record whether he was tall or short, whether he had a memorable face, or whether people were immediately drawn to him because of his appearance.
Instead, the Gospel writers consistently focus on something else.
What Jesus said and did.
How people responded when they encountered him.
Over the centuries, Christians have naturally filled in the gaps. Artists have painted Jesus in the image of their own cultures, which is why we find European-looking Jesus, African Jesus, Asian Jesus and countless other representations around the world.
Historically, Jesus was almost certainly a Jewish man from first-century Galilee. He would have looked like the people around him: recognisably Jewish, shaped by the environment and culture in which he lived.
And perhaps that is part of the significance.
The Gospels do not give us a physical image because they are not interested in preserving a portrait. They are interested in preserving an encounter.
The question they seem to ask is not:
“What did Jesus look like?”
It is:
“What happened when people met him?”

The Bible Is Almost Completely Silent About Jesus’ Childhood
Perhaps the greatest silence of all concerns the first thirty years of Jesus’ life.
The Gospels tell us about his birth. Then, apart from one brief story of Jesus as a twelve-year-old in the Temple, they move almost immediately to his adult ministry.
Three decades disappear.
Most biographies of famous people spend enormous amounts of time exploring childhood. We want to know what experiences shaped them, what moments influenced their character, and what events prepared them for greatness. The Gospels give us almost nothing.
Naturally, later writers attempted to fill the gap. Some early Christian stories describe Jesus performing dramatic miracles as a child, including tales of him bringing clay birds to life. The canonical Gospels, however, avoid all of this.
Instead, they leave us with something much more ordinary.
Jesus appears to have grown up in a small village, learning Scripture, working alongside Joseph, attending festivals, and taking on the responsibilities expected of a Jewish man of his time. For around thirty years, God lived a remarkably ordinary human life.
That might be one of the most extraordinary claims Christianity makes. We often assume significance must always be visible. We expect important people to have dramatic beginnings and remarkable stories from childhood. Yet Jesus spent most of his earthly life unnoticed.
Before the crowds, the miracles and the sermons, there was simply ordinary faithfulness. That changes the way I think about hidden seasons of life.
Perhaps years that appear unimportant to us are not necessarily unimportant to God.

Jesus Never Wrote a Book
Christianity is built around someone who never wrote anything down.
That is unusual. Many influential figures left behind writings that preserved their ideas. Philosophers recorded their arguments. Leaders published their visions. Teachers created texts that carried their message into the future.
Jesus did not.
The only recorded instance of him writing is the mysterious moment when he writes in the dust during the encounter with the woman accused of adultery. Even then, the Gospel does not tell us what he wrote.
Everything we know about Jesus comes through the testimony of others.
At first, this seems surprising. Yet in the world of first-century Judaism, it makes more sense. Teaching was often relational and oral. Rabbis formed disciples through conversation, repetition and lived example.
The goal was not simply to transfer information. It was to form people.
Perhaps that explains something about the way Jesus taught. He did not arrive with a book of instructions that removed every ambiguity. Instead, he told stories, asked questions and invited people into a different way of seeing.
The Gospels themselves emerged from communities remembering, sharing and reflecting on what they had witnessed.
Christianity begins not with a manuscript.
It begins with people saying:
“We encountered someone.”

We Never Learn What Happened to Joseph
Joseph appears at the beginning of the Gospel story. He protects Mary, accepts a role he did not expect, takes his family to safety, raises Jesus and then he disappears. After the story of Jesus in the Temple at twelve years old, Joseph is never mentioned again.
The Bible does not tell us what happened.
Many scholars suggest Joseph probably died before Jesus began his public ministry, although the Gospels never explicitly say this. One possible clue comes at the crucifixion, when Jesus entrusts the care of Mary to the disciple John, something that may suggest Joseph was no longer alive.
But what fascinates me is not simply the question of Joseph’s death. It is his entire place in the story. Joseph never performs miracles, preaches a sermon or becomes famous. Yet without him, the early life of Jesus would have been very different.
History rarely remembers ordinary fathers. Their influence often happens in the background, through daily faithfulness rather than public achievements.
Perhaps that is why Joseph remains such a powerful figure. He reminds us that importance and recognition are not the same thing.
Some of the people who shape the world most deeply will never appear in history books.

The Bible Never Gives Us Jesus’ Birthday
Christmas feels ancient and permanent, yet the Bible never actually tells us the date of Jesus’ birth. December 25th developed centuries later.
The early Christians appear to have been far more interested in the meaning of Jesus’ birth than establishing an exact date.
That can feel strange to us because we live in an age obsessed with precision. We want dates, documents, timelines and proof. But the Gospel writers were not trying to satisfy modern curiosity. The birth narratives are not written like a modern biography. Instead, they are announcing something theological.
God has entered human history.
Hope has appeared in an unexpected place.
A child born among ordinary people has significance far beyond what anyone could see.
The date mattered much less than the meaning.

The Bible Gives Us Only Glimpses of Jesus’ Family
We know Jesus had brothers. The Gospels name some of them: James, Joseph, Judas and Simon.
Yet the family dynamics remain surprisingly unclear. There has been centuries of debate about the precise meaning of the word “brothers,” but what is striking is the humanity of the story.
At one point, Jesus’ family seems to think he has lost his mind. Imagine trying to explain to your relatives that crowds are following you because you are announcing the arrival of God’s kingdom.
Family gatherings could become complicated very quickly. Yet later, some members of Jesus’ family appear among his followers. James, in particular, becomes an important leader in the early church.
Even Jesus’ own family seems to move through uncertainty, misunderstanding and eventual belief, and I find that strangely reassuring.
Faith is rarely as simple as a single moment of certainty.
Sometimes understanding comes slowly.

The Bible Never Tells Us Much About Jesus’ Work
We often imagine Jesus as a carpenter working quietly in Joseph’s workshop.
But the Greek word used in the Gospels is broader. It can refer to a builder, craftsman or labourer. Jesus likely spent years doing physically demanding ordinary work. Carrying materials, using his hands, building and repairing things and coming home tired at the end of the day.
Before Jesus preached a single sermon, he spent decades living the ordinary rhythms of human life.
That matters.
Christianity does not begin with God appearing as a king in a palace or a philosopher surrounded by scholars. It begins with someone from an obscure village doing ordinary work.
Perhaps that is because the ordinary was never ordinary to God.

The more carefully we read the Gospels, the more we notice something surprising.
They are not interested in creating a perfect historical portrait of Jesus in the way we might expect, and therefore do not tell us everything we want to know.
But they tell us the things they believe we most need to know.
They show us Jesus meeting people who lived on the outside. The grieving, the sick, the overlooked. He embraces the curious, the doubtful and the broken. The people who came close enough to encounter him and walked away transformed forever.
Perhaps the silence of the Gospels is intentional.
Perhaps the writers understood that if they gave us every detail about Jesus’ appearance, personality and private life, we might become fascinated by the wrong things.
Instead, they leave us with the question that has echoed through history.
Not:
“What did Jesus look like?”
But:
“What happens when people encounter him?”
Perhaps that is the question the Gospels have always been asking us.
