When Life Feels Like a Long Night
Jacob’s mysterious wrestling match shows us how to keep going when hope runs thin

Welcome to today’s reflection.
We all face moments when the future feels uncertain, and the past weighs heavily on us.
Jacob’s strange night of wrestling reminds us that faith is sometimes less about quick answers and more about holding on until morning comes.
There is a curious story in the Old Testament which I have always been fascinated with.
Jacob was on edge. He was about to meet his brother Esau for the first time in years, and the memory of what he had done weighed heavily on him. He had cheated Esau out of his birthright, stolen his blessing, and walked away as though the end justified the means. Now, he wasn’t sure how Esau would receive him, with open arms or sharpened knives.
In an attempt to soften the encounter, Jacob sent a delegation ahead with gifts and words of peace. While waiting for news, he found himself caught up in one of the most mysterious episodes in the Bible: a night-long wrestling match with a nameless opponent. It is as random as it sounds.
We aren’t told who the assailant was. An angel? A stranger? God himself? The text is deliberately vague. What we are told is that the wrestling lasted through the night, that Jacob’s hip was dislocated, and that despite his pain, he did not give up. By dawn, Jacob received a blessing from his opponent before the fighter slipped away into the shadows, never to be seen again.
At first glance, it’s a bizarre little story. No clear winner is declared. No great revelation is given. Yet, it sits like a hinge in Jacob’s life. For the first time, he doesn’t rely on cunning shortcuts or clever tricks. He simply endures, and after the struggle, he is changed. He limps, yes, but he also carries a new strength, a blessing that prepares him for his reunion with Esau.
The point isn’t who won the fight. The point is that Jacob wrestled, and he kept going.
