Welcome to today’s reflection.

Today, we focus on a passage from Matthew 6:19-34, in which Jesus urges his followers not to worry.

For some, it will form the basis of this Sunday’s lectionary reading.

Most of us do not think of ourselves as wealthy.

We think of ourselves as careful. Responsible. Sensible. People who are simply trying to make life work in an uncertain world. That is why this passage from Matthew can unsettle us. Jesus is not addressing excess or indulgence so much as orientation. He is speaking to people who have learned how to manage risk, prepare, and protect themselves from what might come next.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth.”

The problem with that instruction is not that it sounds unrealistic and even irresponsible. We have been taught that storing, saving, and securing are signs of maturity. Jesus does not deny the value of prudence, but he does question what happens when prudence becomes a place of trust.

Because where we store our treasure, we store our lives.
